   Editorial                                                        JAMIAT STANDS FIRST

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has a grand history of services to Islam, community, nation and the country. Before and after independence, it has left the imprints of its services on the sands of time, in different spheres of life. After independence the sphere of its activities has expanded. Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind continues its onward march under the farsighted and sagacious leader ship of its president, Maulana Syed Asad Madani and General Secretary, Maulana Mahmood Madani. It has played historic role for the relief and rehabilitation of the Gujarat riots. That is a shining record of its services. It has come forward for legal defence of those detained. It has provided breakfast and food for thousands of uprooted Muslims. It got constructed more than six thousand houses for permanent rehabilitation of Muslim victims of the infamous riot of Gujarat. All that forms a glorious chapter in the history f the organization. United Nations Organization on its part has recognized and appreciated the services of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind in Gujarat.

A recent addition to the chapter is the establishment of Jamiat Law Institute under the leadership of a legal luminary, Dr. Tahir Mahmood, a former chairman of National Minorities Commission. The Institute is likely to educate and train a large number of people for defence of the rights of the minorities. Although Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind is active on several fronts in adverse circumstances, it has never neglected its primary obligations. It has been working to fulfill them within the limits of its resources and possibilities. However there are elements, committed to their special interests that consider opposition to the activities of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind as proof of their existence. However persons acquainted with the condition in the county and abroad, appreciate the services and activities of the organization. It is an encouraging sign that majority of the country has rejected the objections of its critics. A survey was conducted by the largest circulated Urdu Weekly (Nai Dunia, Urdu Weekly, Issue for March 7-13, 4002), to find out which among the organizations leads in upholding the rights of Muslims. The majority of those who responded to the questionnaire placed Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind as No. 1. Other organizations that spend a large amount of money on their publicity and public relations have been left behind at No.2, 3 or 4.

That clearly indicates that majority of the country appreciates the activities of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind. For the first time, they have accepted Muslims as the second largest community and a part and parcel of India. Their leader has declared openly that in changed conditions, social and cultural understanding is the need of the hour. For the first time there is a realization in the country that unity and peace are essential for progress of the country. The basis of nationhood is the country. That is an encouraging change.

The President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind feels that resolution of issues and removal of misunderstandings through free and unfettered dialogue is the sign of a healthy democracy.

In that respect, the role of JUH General Secretary, Maulana Mahmood Madani has been important and encouraging. The new generation of the country finds in him a symbol their of hopes and aspirations. They feel that he is working for a better tomorrow and a fulfillment of their dreams. It is their hope and prayer that he shall perform his role to meet their longings and feelings. May Allah Ta’ala bless him with the strength to give expression to the mute yearnings of the young and old alike! There is no doubt about it that the voice of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind relating to any particular issue is heard by every section of the country with respect and attention.

The organization is in a position to determine effectively the direction of the tide of events. Several times when there is a talk at the community level for resolving issues through dialogue and negotiation, there has been no progress in that direction. However, when Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind started parleys with leaders of Rashtriya Sevak Sangh, on progress of the country’s communal amity and maintenance of peace, the attention of the whole country was focused on that. There was a stir throughout the country.

Every political group has tried to link itself with the process of mutual dialogue by describing that a sign of vitality. However they have not made it clear what are their objectives by carrying on such dialogue and what do they intend to achieve by that process. However the media is fully aware of the nature of dialogue conducted by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and the issues that have been covered. The dialogues were held in two parts on December 20, 2003 and January 14, 2004.
